We can’t resist sharing some of the comments we have received since our performance:
“The Clarinet Choir is an extraordinary ensemble; a unique blend of ages, abilities and clarinets musically and inspiringly led by their conductor, Nigel Wood. Every single member plays with such conviction and commitment to the music with an intense concentration, resulting in breath taking dynamics, exhilarating performances, of such a wide engaging variety, which have you perched on the edge of your seat. Unmissable! “ A local clarinet teacher

“Just to say how much we enjoyed the concert last night ! I particularly enjoyed the Bull Ring , Calling all Workers and Nimrod ( the drumroll was superb ! ) Have put some dates in my diary and look forward to seeing you all again on YouTube! Please keep me updated on any future events. Well done everyone!” Chris
“I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the concert. It was brilliant. The playing seemed flawless to me. Every piece was played with 100% commitment and sincerity. The timps and percussion added an orchestral quality to the pieces - a great addition. The crescendo and volume in the Elgar was amazing - I think this is a difficult thing to achieve. Loud volume in non-professional groups can often be out of tune and distorted. That didn't happen here, it was magnificent. My favourite pieces were Nigel's composition, the baroque stuff and also the medieval sounding music (sorry do not have the programme to hand). What's clear though is that the clarinet choir can play any style it turns to. What a truly enjoyable evening. Surely this is one of the best (or the best) non- professional group around the country never mind in Birmingham.” Melissa

This was our third concert. The first in 2016 was in conjunction with Equinox Saxophone Ensemble plus a host of guest appearances at local events and concerts.

In July, our MD, Nigel, set off to the World Saxophone Congress in Zagreb with Equinox Saxophone Ensemble, Equinox to perform some of his compositions, including the world Premiere of ‘Serendip’. Composed in response to a commission by Roland, this work features Roland’s latest electronic wind instrument, the Aerophone, played by Alistair Parnell. The work was included in our summer concert in an arrangement for clarinet choir, and featuring the same soloist but with Nigel at the helm instead of playing.

Cardiff Clarinet Convention 2018

Earlier this year, nearly half our choir went off en masse to Cardiff University School of Music to attend the annual Cardiff Clarinet Convention organised by one of our members, Peter Fielding. We had a fabulous day playing a range of music in large and small ensembles.

Playday 2018

In May we held our annual Playday at St.Joseph’s RC Church hall in Cotteridge, which enabled us to do some intensive work on repertoire for our forthcoming Summer concert as well as the opportunity to play quartets.

Also in May, a group of us went off to Symphony Hall in Birmingham to watch the concerto final of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition and see local girl Lauren Zhang win with her mind-blowing performance of Prokofiev’s 2nd Piano Concerto. It was filmed from 4 until 7 pm after which we dashed home to relive the concert (and try and spot ourselves) when it was broadcast on TV later that evening, having been sworn to secrecy about the result.

Bournville Heritage Day 2017

In 2017 we were honoured to be invited to open the inaugural Bournville Heritage Day where we played three performances in different Bournville venues, one in the pouring rain!

'All Gardens Great and Small' October 2017

In October we even appeared on television in More4’s “All Gardens Great and Small” with Dee and Miranda Hart, which featured our M.D.’s award winning garden. Of course we couldn’t let that opportunity pass and had to get in on the act… in the pouring rain. See us here: Nigel's Garden in 'All Gardens Great and Small'
